Brock Lesnar defeats Mark Hunt In His UFC Return

Former WWE and UFC World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar walked into the octagon( albeit not to his WWE entrance music, as was rumored) repeatedly took down, smothered, grounded and pounded the “Super Samoan” Mark Hunt on his was to a decision victory.

In the post fight interview, Joe Rogan mentions to Lesnar that by defeating Mark Hunt, he has thrown himself directly into the heavyweight title mix. To which Lesnar responds hes “taking things one day at a time”. Not exactly ruling out a future return to the Octagon.

It was also reported earlier today that Lesnar received a $2.5 Million payout for this fight. This is the largest payout in UFC history.?

Kell Brook (right) can shine in his toughest fight so far, says Johnny Nelson

Johnny Nelson knows exactly what fellow Sheffielder Kell Brook is capable of, and believes he can upset the odds against Gennady Golovkin…

Brook to fight Golovkin

Blockbuster bout to be shown live on Sky Sports Box Office

It’s another Amir Khan-Canelo Alvarez shocker, isn’t it? Kell, an unbeaten welterweight world champion, wants to risk it all like Khan did.

People said Kell hadn’t fought anybody then, boom, he’s fighting one of the most ferocious punchers out there. He’s stepped up two weights to do it.

Kell needs a fight that captures his imagination, puts him on fire, and gives him the ‘hunted’ mentality rather than the ‘hunter’ mentality.

Johnny Nelson

Like I said with Khan, this isn’t an impossible task. He has to stick to a game-plan. Kell is, without a doubt, the better technical fighter, Golovkin is clearly the bigger puncher. It’s a hard slog for Kell but it’s a possibility.

Kell is very strong at middleweight, people don’t realise that, and that’s why he’s so successful at welterweight. Probably, this will be a gradual progression for him to step up the weights because he could do that pretty easily.

Gennady Golovkin (left) will give Brook a welcome fear factor, says Nelson

Kell needs a fight that captures his imagination, puts him on fire, and gives him the ‘hunted’ mentality rather than the ‘hunter’ mentality. Therefore, I expect to see something outstanding from Kell.

Without a doubt he has more to gain than to lose. Kell will still have his IBF welterweight title. He loses his undefeated record if he does lose but what could he gain? Go back in history and look at fighters that have stepped up these weight divisions – Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard. Kell can punch, Kell can box, Kell can move, Kell is hungry. Anybody that fights Kell will tell you his punches are like a stun gun.

If you compare this to Khan-Canelo, nobody thought Khan would have the punching power to hurt Canelo – he had speed and boxing ability. I believe Kell has the punching power, the speed and the boxing ability.

The people around Kell know he needs somebody that will set him on fire and give him a fear factor. Kell jumped at the opportunity.

If Kell pulls this off, he will be rated pound-for-pound among the best because he will have pulled off a feat that nobody else has done.

Kell Brook will challenge? WBA Super, WBC and IBF world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on September 10 at London’s 02 Arena, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Brook-GGG deal in 'two days'

Kell Brook didn’t hesitate to agree terms with Gennady Golovkin

Kell Brook needed just two days of negotiations to overtake Chris Eubank Jr in the race to fight Gennady Golovkin, the Kazakh’s promoter has said.

British champion Eubank Jr was expected to meet Golovkin but weeks of contract talks didn’t result in an agreement, allowing Brook to jump the queue.

Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s representative, has revealed that Brook didn’t think twice about accepting the identical deal that had been offered to Eubank Jr weeks prior.

Loeffler exclusively told Sky Sports: “We thought the Eubank Jr fight was going to happen but, last Wednesday, [Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn] called me and said there’s problems.

“That’s when he suggested he would call Brook, to see if he would be interested in the fight.

“Brook agreed to the fight verbally, and we had the deal done within two days with the same deal that [Hearn] offered to Eubank Jr.

We got the deal done in two days with Brook for the same arena, the same date, same Sky Sports Box Office. Brook wanted to fight.

“We got the deal done in two days with Brook for the same arena, the same date, same Sky Sports Box Office. Brook wanted to fight – he knows it’s the biggest fight of his career.”

Asked whether he believed Eubank Jr was intentionally pricing himself out of an agreement, Loeffler said: “That’s really a question for Eddie, who was involved in the internal discussions with Eubank.

“But it’s a lot easier when both fighters want to make a fight.

“It’s one thing being vocal, and talking about fighting someone.? If you really want to fight, you do what you can to make the fight.”

Brook, the IBF welterweight champion, has never boxed for a title above 147lbs but will jump two weight divisions to challenge for Golovkin’s WBA Super, WBC and IBF middleweight titles.

But Loeffler has insisted that the assumption Golovkin will have a size advantage is not true.

“It’s not as big a physical difference as people think – Brook is a huge welterweight and Gennady is a small middleweight,” he said.

“If you see them standing next to each other, Brook is 5ft 9in and Gennady is 5ft 10in. It’s Brook’s speed and experience against Gennady’s power.

“Give Brook a lot of credit for stepping up. It’s a huge opportunity for him – and a huge opportunity for Gennady too.”

The Eubanks declined to comment when contacted by Sky Sports.

Kell Brook will challenge for Gennady Golovkin’s world middleweight titles on September 10 at London’s 02 Arena, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Luke Campbell won’t lack for confidence against Argenis Mendez

Luke Campbell is keen to continue belying his boyish looks by showing true grit in the ring when he meets former world champion Argenis Mendez.

The Hull lightweight (13-1-KO11) takes on Mendez (23-4-1-KO12) on the undercard of Josh Warrington v Patrick Hyland in Leeds on July 30 and says spirit as much as technical skill will help propel him to world level.

‘Cool Hand’ told Sky Sports: “A hell of a lot of people will underestimate me because I look like a little boy but I’ve got a big heart. Not only that, but I’m really dedicated to this sport. I’m in it for one reason; to be the best.

“There’s no way I’m going to go in there and back down for anybody. I don’t train for that. I would live in regret for the rest of my life if I ever thought I’d backed down or given up against anybody. It’s not in my nature. I believe I’ve got a bigger heart than anyone.”

Campbell, who won Olympic gold at the 2012 London Games as a bantamweight, was beaten for the first time as a professional in December 2015 when Yvan Mendy knocked him down on the way to a points upset.

However, far from that defeat damaging confidence, Campbell insists he learned a great deal on that disappointing night at The O2 and plans to leave it behind as his sole career loss.

“You don’t achieve what I’ve achieved and won what I’ve won without mental toughness and heart. It was a defeat I shouldn’t have faced because I shouldn’t have been in there that night but everything happens for a reason.

“I can still sit here with a smile on my face, taking the positives from that fight. There have been a lot of changes made since then, too.”

'Eubanks made deal impossible'

Promoter Eddie Hearn says Chris Eubank Jr missed out on fighting Gennady Golovkin because they took too long to negotiate a deal

Eddie Hearn has blamed “impossible” demands made by Chris Eubank Jr and Sr for the collapse of a deal to fight Gennady Golovkin.

Negotiations for Eubank Jr to challenge Golovkin for his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight titles were abandoned when the former failed to sign the fight contract before a deadline specified by Golovkin’s camp.

Kazakh superstar Golovkin will instead defend his titles against Kell Brook on September 10 at London’s O2 Arena, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Speaking about the dramatic turn of events on Sky Sports News HQ, Hearn said: “I worked for three weeks on that fight (Eubank Jr versus Golovkin), negotiating with Chris Eubank Sr. It felt like three years.

“We got into a position where everybody was ready to sign. He (Eubank Jr) was offered the same pay-per-view deal as Anthony Joshua, Carl Froch and the one that Kell Brook accepted.

“Unfortunately they (the Eubanks) made the deal impossible. The things they wanted were just a complete no-go. They were given a deadline and they chose not to take the fight.”

Brook, the IBF’s current welterweight king, will move up two divisions to take on feared knockout artist Golovkin, who has 32 stoppages in 35 unbeaten fights to date.

Brook had been in talks to take on WBO welterweight champion Jessie? Vargas in a unification bout but jumped at the chance to face Golovkin when Hearn informed him about Eubank Jr missing the deadline to take the fight.

Explaining how the fight came about, Hearn said: “Well, it was madness to be honest with you.

“We were in talks for two separate fights between Chris Eubank Jr. and Gennady Golovkin and also for Kell Brook in a unification clash with Jessie Vargas.

Golovkin to fight Brook

“The Eubanks were given a deadline for the fight and chose not to accept it.

“Then all of a sudden I was on the phone to Kell Brook and I said ‘it’s a shame you aren’t a middleweight, you could fight Golovkin’ and he said ‘I’ll fight Golovkin’. I asked if he was serious and he said ‘absolutely, sign me up’.

“Twenty-four hours later he signed the deal and he is fighting the most dangerous man on the planet, the No 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.”

One man who was less than pleased to see Brook fighting Golovkin was Eubank Jr and he took to Twitter to deny ever being offered a contract to face Golovkin.

Eubank Jr tweeted: “I haven’t been shown one contract since my fight with GGG was announced. I’m still ready & waiting to sign. Fighting Brook is a joke. #2Small”

Despite the difficulties with negotiations, Hearn feels this is a temporary setback for Eubank Jr.

Hearn said: “There is a huge future for Chris Eubank Jr. He can fight the winner later on in the year. He has got a big future ahead of him. He misses out this time but I am sure he will get his shot in due course.”

The Eubanks declined to comment when contacted by Sky Sports.

Warrington plans for war

Josh Warrington and Patrick Hyland look ahead to their featherweight bout

Josh Warrington is steeling himself for a toe-to-toe war with former world title challenger Patrick Hyland on July 30, live on Sky Sports.

WBC International featherweight champion Warrington (23-0-KO4) welcomes Hyland (31-2-KO15) to Leeds just over three months after the Irishman was stopped in two rounds by WBC boss Gary Russell Jr in Connecticut.

Having recently overcome Joel Brunker and Hisashi Amagasa with hard-fought points decisions, Warrington believes he is in for a less tactical fight against Hyland, whose last three bouts have taken place in the US.

Warrington said: “Amagasa and Brunker were tough nights but we got the wins. Patrick has respect for me and I’ve got a lot of respect for him.

“He’s boxed for the world title earlier in the year so he’s been in with the very best and I know that this is a tough examination for me.

“I had to box clever in the last few fights, but I think this one will be toe-to-toe. Patrick doesn’t take a backwards step in his fights and I think that I’ll be able to show on July 30 that I can really dig and I think it’s going to be a great main event and one that I’ll shine in.

“This is a great show – it’s the best we’ve done so far in Leeds. The fans have put their hands in their pockets time and time again to come and see me and I think we’re delivering a brilliant card for them. The card oozes talent from top to bottom and it’s going to be a great night.”

The speed of Russell Jr's punching proved too much for Hyland

Hyland echoed Warrington’s sentiments and said the vociferous support for the home fighter would motivate rather than deter him.

“I’ve got a lot of fans coming over and the atmosphere is going to be electric,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of Josh’s fights and the noise is deafening so I can’t wait to be part of it.

“Gary Russell Jr is the best in the division. He is so, so fast and speed kills in this sport, but this is a different fight. I like how Josh fights and I’ve wanted to get in there with him to test him out and try to take that future world title shot that he’s looking at for myself. I think that we’ll end up standing toe-to-toe and giving the fans a real war.”

Also on the bill is Tyrone Nurse’s British super-lightweight title defence against Tommy Coyle and Dillian Whyte, Ryan Burnett and Gamal Yafai will also be in action.
