Canelo Alvarez insists he will not overlook “explosive” Amir Khan as he continues to plot a fight with Gennady Golovkin.

The Mexican superstar will start as huge favourite on May 7 when he defends his WBC middleweight title at a catchweight 155lbs against an opponent who has never before fought beyond welterweight.

Alvarez has long been on collision course with Golovkin, the unbeaten IBF and WBA Super champion who insists he will not agree to a unification contest at anything less than the standard 160lbs limit.

But the immediate concern is a dangerous assignment against Khan, who is convinced he can pull off a major shock in Las Vegas and stake his own claim to be considered among the pound-for-pound contenders.

Alvarez said: “He’s a fighter that’s very fast. He’s explosive, I’m training 100 per cent because I don’t like surprises.

“I never underestimate anyone in the ring because anything can happen. My job is to be prepared for the best possible fighter so I can give a great performance.
