At its worst, Star Trek deserved all the ridicule it ever got.

Previously, we looked at the original Star Trek series at its very best, and noted that, when it fulfills its potential, it is some of the finest sci-fi in television history. The good outweighs the bad with Star Trek, but that’s not to say there isn’t any bad. At its worst, Roddenberry’s Star Trek deserved all the ridicule it ever got. There are some episodes of Star Trek that are so cheesy they give a bad name to the honored title of “nerd.” As we celebrate the franchise’s fiftieth anniversary this year, let’s break down what didn’t work with sci-fi TV’s crown jewel.

So what went wrong, when Star Trek went wrong? To start with the shows sometimes had too much cheese (without enough heart). There are some cringe-worthy moments in Star Trek. Its most loyal and hardcore fans can appreciate most of the episodes, and some even outright enjoy them, but you’d be hard-pressed to find much support for the very worst of it.

Also, while some of the sci-fi language has seeped into popular culture, there’s ten times as much technobabble that has remained a part of the show’s lexicon, to an embarrassing degree. Everyone knows what we mean when we say “warp speed” and even people who’ve never seen an episode know the phrase “beam me up, Scotty,” but listen to characters talk about “phase-inducers” and “trans-modifiers” (like you’d hear in The Next Generation) or even something as quaint as “reroute the auxiliary bypass couplers” (like you’d hear in The Original Series) and it’s enough to make your head spin. Regular fans are so used to hearing that stuff that it’s become white noise, but non-fans are instantly put off by the gibberish. It’s like pro wrestling fans: You don’t even notice anymore that you’re watching two guys in their underwear pretend fighting. It’s just so “usual” you don’t appreciate what it’s like seeing it as a first-time viewer.

Finally, the worst of Star Trek is defined by stories that just failed to hit the mark. Either they are lazy stories, stories that are too dated to the era in which they were produced or just embarrassing plot lines that even the most died-in-the-wool fans cringe at, Star Trek has some clunkers in its episode library. You want examples?

SPOCK’S BRAIN

star-trek-spocks-brain

From the very very beginning of this episode it’s clear we have a problem. At the beginning of every episode, after the credits roll, we’re given the title of the week’s show. “Spock’s Brain” flashes on the screen and with it connotations of cheesy B-movies flutter in my mind. Spock’s Brain sounds like something the Mystery Science Theater 3000 gang would roast on their show. And that’s just the title. Watch it and it’s clear that this episode more than lives up to its bad first impression.

The premise of the episode is that an alien (played of course by a beautiful woman) comes aboard the Enterprise and, through her mad alien skillz (actually a power bracelet), incapacitates the crew and steals…Spock’s brain. What follows is a race against the clock to recover the brain (Spock’s body can survive without its brain for 24 hours….I know, I know).

Background

When George Groves slipped to a split-decision defeat to WBC world champion Badou Jack on September 12, he could have been forgiven for thinking a third failure to become world champion was one disappointment too many.

‘The Saint’ admits he considered retirement but instead opted to part company with trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick and hire Shane McGuigan, reuniting him with former gym-mate David Haye.

Groves is still just 27 and, buoyed by the atmosphere in McGuigan’s south London gym, is bidding to begin a fourth journey to a world title fight by delighting his fellow Londoners with an emphatic victory over Di Luisa.

I don’t believe George is the same fighter as he was before those fights against Froch and Jack. I can only comment from my point of view. We will see how it goes, and I do have a good punch.

What McGuigan says

What the experts say

Give Shane the responsibility – if he says ‘jump’, ask ‘how high’ rather than ‘why’. That’s the important ingredient that had gone missing from George’s arsenal after he left Adam Booth.

Johnny Nelson

What he did well before the Froch fight, I think he went on to neglect. Maybe he believed in his own power too much and wanted to stand and trade. If he can gel with McGuigan, he can get into those big fights again.

Callum Smith

This is a nice fight for him to come back to and he deserves that. He’s had a couple of big, hard fights and this is a nice comfortable one. He’s got a new trainer and it’s about settling in and getting used to it.

Dave Coldwell

It worries me that George might well have hit his peak so early after what he’s been through. I hope not because I want all British boxers to do well – even if I am not going to send him a good luck message.

Awesome Kong Reportedly Sent Home from TNA Tour After Incident with Reby Sky

– TNA Knockout Awesome Kong was reportedly sent home from the current UK tour on Friday, the first day of the tour, after a backstage incident with World Heavyweight Champion Matt Hardy’s wife, Reby Sky.

Kong had an issue with Reby trying to dress in the same locker room that the Knockouts were using and threw Reby’s bag out of the room, according to PWInsider. This was the first time Reby had used the same dressing room as the female talents as she did not use the Knockouts locker room at the recent Impact Wrestling tapings in Bethlehem, PA, she dressed separately.

Reby reportedly left the room, likely to speak to a TNA official, and Kong went after her for “not apologizing” when she came back to get her belongings. Two versions of what happened next are currently going around. The first is that Kong tried to go after Reby but was stopped. The second version, which is being reported by many more sources, is that Kong grabbed Reby around the neck and assaulted her, before she was stopped by security and restrained by producer Pat Kenney (Simon Diamond).

It was also said that Reby and Matt’s son was nearby during the incident. No word yet on what this means for Kong’s future with TNA but you may remember she was previously released for an incident with Bubba The Love Sponge in 2010.

The beef between Kong and Reby goes back to 2013 when Reby spoke out on Twitter about WWE Legend Sid Vicious no-showing an independent event. This led to Kong taking a shot at Reby during her “YouShoot” interview in the “Ho Bag” segment. Reby was later asked about Kong taking the shot on her “Ask.fm” page. Reby, who also called Kong a drug addict, wrote the following when asked about the shoot interview diss:

“Not aware of this, if it is true. Doesn’t make much sense, as I don’t know her on a really personal level & we have been nothing but nice to each other in passing at shows. We’ve actually texted back & forth a few times, so if she now has a problem with me, I can only attribute it to one thing/person. Fake as fuck to be nice to my face & talk shit to a camera if its true, but no shocker there. That’s 99% of the women in this business anyway. Next.”
