Moore: Walk away please Price

David Price should walk away following his last defeat, says Jamie Moore

David Price should walk away following his last defeat, says Jamie Moore

It’s been a rollercoaster week with some sad sights, some questionable scoring and some fantastic action, so who better than Jamie Moore, MSc, to discuss it all…

We were all devastated to see David Price get knocked out again, but do you think it’s time for him to hang up the gloves?

Jamie says: Well first of all, it was a massive shock. We all expected him to win but to see him get knocked out like that, that badly, was awful. I was gutted. Absolutely gutted.

It is never nice when someone you like, respect and have a lot of time for, loses. It is awful. I think he’s going to have some time thinking about it and it depends on his mind-set and desire. But when you think about what you set out to achieve and you realise you can’t achieve that, it is probably time to walk away.

David Price is a level-headed guy and I am sure he has other things to do so while he is young enough and fresh enough to do something else, I hope he does that.

Jamie Moore

Pricey could probably win a British title and get the Lonsdale but I don’t think that was his aspiration. He wanted to be a world champion, so he must be devastated.

He’s been in some dark places before and I’m not sure he wants to go back there again. David is a level-headed guy and I am sure he has other things to do so while he is young enough and fresh enough to do something else, I hope he does that.

Saturday night was even worse thanks the scorecards but do you think Anthony Crolla is right to chase the rematch?

Jamie says: Well I don’t blame Crolla and I would do the same but there are two things that worry me. Firstly, I have heard the WBA have told Darleys Perez he’s got to fight Derry Mathews, the interim champion, in 90 days. That has to happen first and that means it is a long old wait for Ant.

Secondly, I have a feeling that if he does get that rematch he’ll have to travel and fight where he wants it – and if Ant didn’t get any favours in Manchester what is he going to get away from home?

Forget about WBO champion Terry Flanagan because he’s a proper handful, one of those fighters you don’t really want to fight unless you have to. But there was talk beforehand that if Ant won, he’d fight Kevin Mitchell and I still think it is a big, big fight.

Look, Ant is the victor without the belt, we all know that, and Mitchell looked great against Jorge Linares and while we could – and should – have been talking about world titles, it would be a great match-up. It would be even better if there was a title on the line.

Scott Quigg flattened Kiko Martinez in two so does that put him ahead of Carl Frampton?

Jame says: Everyone is going to compare their performances against Kiko Martinez and there’s no doubt that Quigg’s was better. But it was short and sweet – because it was such a good performance – so it is hard to gauge.

And don’t forget, once he’d got over those two knockdowns on Saturday, Frampton figured Alejandro Gonzalez Jr out and bossed it. It wasn’t a terrible night at the office but I would definitely say the momentum has swung Scott Quigg’s way.

Scott Quigg did better than Carl Frampton but has the gap widened?

Scott Quigg did better than Carl Frampton but has the gap widened?

Momentum is now with Scott and although I watched the Frampton fight when I got home and saw he wasn’t as bad as people had been saying, it is certainly more of a level playing field now. And I hate to say it but it’s probably now a little further away from happening.

Scott didn’t do himself any favours because he was so devastating and Frampton will be questioning himself all of a sudden. He also talked about moving up a weight but don’t worry about that, Scott is a big super-bantamweight, and he can do the same. He will chase him down.

Surely you thought we were going to ask an underpants question but the bottom line is, is Tyson Fury going to get under Wladimir Klitschko’s skin?

Jamie says: I can’t see him getting wound-up by it all. He’s been through so much. That build-up with David Haye has prepared him for this sort of stuff and Shannon Briggs has chased him round the world for the last 12 months so I just can’t see it having any affect on him.

He realises a lot of what Fury says –

Dillian Whyte will begin his pursuit of Anthony Joshua when he fights Brazilian Irineu Beato Costa Junior live on Sky Sports next month.

There is no love lost between Joshua and Whyte, who boasts an amateur victory over British heavyweight boxing’s great hope but has been out of the Sky Sports limelight for more than three years.

The pair are on collision course to meet later this year for the British title provided both remain unbeaten in the interim, and Whyte will have the first of two tune-ups for his rival on the undercard of another grudge match – the Hull contest between
