NJPW G1 Climax 25 Block A and B Announcements @njpw1972

NJPW Dominion Results @njpw1972

Credit PWPonderings

0. Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi, Ryusuke Taguchi, Máscara Dorada & Sho Tanaka def Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima, Jushin Thunder Liger, Tiger Mask & Yohei Komatsu
Typical ten man tag to get everyone on the card. However, Masacara Dorada looked great here and seemed like a complete waste on this card. Maybe bigger plans lay ahead of him in the Jr. division, perhaps a singles match with Ricochet to setup Ricochet as a challenger. Nakanishi had a segment with Tenzan that was horrible. Just slow and clunky. I just can’t imagine Tenzan in the G1-Climax right now. It might seriously hurt him in the long run. He did not look up to speed in this match at all. Everyone else got their signature spots in. Of course one of the young lions had to take the fall. Dorada Screwdriver on Komatsu for the win. Nothing match. Komatsu and Tanaka probably keep losing until the Tokyo Dome or something. **

1. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Title, 3 Way Match: Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson (c) def Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly/Rocky Romero & Barreta
This is what you’d expect. Very spot heavy, very chaotic and very fun none the less. Understandably, these matches are not for everybody. But for an opener and the style of matches this Jr. tag division produces, it does it’s job. So the formula may not change for a while. I think the Young Bucks are already burned out in the Jr. tag division and I would seriously consider putting them in the Heavyweight tag division. I think if they really want to prove how good they really are, they should step up a weight class and try and dominant that division. And if a baby face turn is what’s necessary, then so it must be. I think a baby face Young Bucks team against Anderson and Gallows at the Tokyo Dome would be fantastic and refreshing, but I’m not sure Jado and Gedo see the Bucks in that light. Still a fun opener though. ***1/4

2. Special Tag Match: Tetuya Naito & Tomoaki Honma def Bad Luck Fale & Yujiro Takahashi
This match was fascinating. Naito seems to be on the verge of heel turn and also looking like a stunt double for Mike Meyers in “Wayne’s World” with his black shirt and black hat with his long hair. Fale and Yujiro jumped Honma from the start and Naito just stopped walking to the ring. He eventually got in the ring. He didn’t even want to tag in for the first portion of the match. After finally tagging in, he seemed to act like a tweener. He refused to tag Homna back in back Honma tagged himself back in. Naito seemed like he was going to walk away after this but came back and doubled Yujiro helping Honma get the pin on Yujiro. The whole time, Naito has this look of disgust and disdain. Naito put his hat back on and walked away. Naito was also wearing his shirt the whole time. I think Naito has set himself as a tweener at this point. **1/2

3. Special Singles Match: Katsuyori Shibata def Kazushi Sakuraba
This was fantastic. Great story telling here. First Shibata beat up Sakuraba. Then Sakuraba beat up Shibata. Then Sakuraba tried various kinds of submissions but Shibata refused to quit. At one point, the only body part Shibata could use to grab the rope was his mouth. Shibata’s facial reactions were spectactular and really put the match to that next level. Shibata finally won after a choke sleeper followed by the PK Kick. Crowd was going nuts for this match. This was very exciting throughout and didn’t need to go long to do so. Shibata may be in line for an IWGP Heavyweight Title match based on this win. ****1/4

4. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title: KUSHIDA def Kenny Omega (c) to win the title
This match was really good. The first half of the match was Omega taking out KUSHIDA’s knee, which KUSHIDA sold for most of the match. The second half was back and forth. KUSHIDA went to work on Omega’s arm. Omega got out of the Hoverboard Lock at first. Omega then attempted the One-Winged Angel but KUSHIDA countered that into the Hoverboard Lock. Omega looked like he was about to get out but KUSHIDA repositioned himself in the middle of the ring and Omega tapped. Very exciting finishing stretch and the crowd popped for KUSHIDA’s big win. Even though it’s his second title reign, I really count it as his first. When he defeated Ibushi last year it was an accident. Ibushi got knocked out and couldn’t continue. KUSHIDA dropped the title soon after. I think this time around, he’ll get the full title run. Really good match with great title win. ***1/2

5. NEVER Openweight Title: Togi Makabe (c) def Tomohiro Ishii to retain
Brutal match as you’d expect. Ishii seemed to have separated his shoulder again after a German suplex from Makabe. They beat the living hell out of each other in this match. I was shocked Makabe won. The story of the match is Ishi never beating Makabe. Perhaps they’re saving that. King Kong Knee Drop ends it. The doctor almost stopped the match but let it continue. ***3/4
They announce the G1 Blocks during intermission.
Block A: Makabe, Tenzan, Yano, Gallows, Fale, Naito, Shibata, Ibushi, Tanahashi, AJ Styles Block A
Block B: Goto, Kojima, Nagata, Honma, Elgin, Anderson, Yujiro, Ishii, Nakamura, Okada
Biggest Match Reactions: Ibushi/Shibata, Shibata/AJ, Ibushi/Tanahashi/, Ishii/Okada, Ishii/Nakamura and Nakamura/Okada

6. IWGP Tag Team Title: Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows def Michael Bennett & Matt Taven (c) to win the titles
This was the best of their series of matches, but that isn’t saying a whole lot. Of course Amber Gallows and Maria interfered. This match was hectic from start to finish. There is hardly any heat to these matches because both teams are heels. The only real time the crowd pops is when Maria is being threatened with physicality, which she was as Gallows booted her off the apron. This led to a Magic Killer on Taven for the win and their third title reign. Hopefully this Bennett/Taven experiment is over with. **1/2

7. Special Singles Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi def Toru Yano
Yano tried to cheat every way possible to beat Tanahashi again. Both guys took of a turn buckle pad at one point. There was a ref bump followed by Yano using a chair on Tanahashi. Yano even powerbombed Tanahashi on the chair at one point but Tanahashi kicked out. Eventually after many close cheating near falls, Tanahashi low blowed Yano getting revenge for Yano low blowing Tanahashi earlier in the match. Sling blade followed by the High Fly Flow ends it. This un-necessarily long feud must continue though as they will meet once more in the G1 this year. Hopefully Tanahashi wins again so this feud can finally end. **3/4
Winner: Hiroshi Tanahashi

8. IWGP Intercontinental Title: Hirooki Goto (c) def Shinsuke Nakamura to retain
This started out a little slow but it built to a great final ten minutes. The story here was that Nakamura, who came to ring dressed a as a red ninja, came in cocky. At times, he was even show boating more than usual. By the end, Goto had counters for Nakamura’s signature moves. At one point, it seemed like Nakamura was going to deliver the final Boma-Ye but Goto countered it. A sequence of moves led to Goto hitting the Shoten Kai for the win. Great final stretch. The feeling here is that Nakamura’s redemption will be winning the G1 Climax, perhaps against AJ Styles and then go on to challenge the IWGP Heavyweight Champion at the Tokyo Dome. And if Nakamura wins at the Tokyo Dome, this sets up Goto/Nakamura for the IWGP title early next year if you wanted to. But I’m glad Nakamura is hopefully done with the IC title and can move on the IWGP Heavyweight title again. Let guys like Goto, Ibushi, Naito and Shibata have great matches for it. Hell, I bet Ibushi wins the IC title at the Tokyo Dome against whomever the champion is. ***3/4
Winner And STILL IWGP Intercontinental Champion: Hirooki Goto

9. IWGP Heavyweight Title: Kazuchika Okada def AJ Styles (c) to win the Title
At first, there was a lot of interference from the Bullet Club like there previous matches from last year. This time Red Shoes got fed up with it. First Red Shoes of all people told AJ to “Suck it!” and the rest of the Bullet Club to “Suck it!” and then proceeding to send the Bullet Club to the back for the remainder of the match. After this they turned it up a notch. They were forearming the shit out of each other. There were some big bumps down the stretch like AJ getting fireman’s carried off the top to the apron. They had excellent counters down the stretch great teases for the Styles Clash. Styles never got to hit it. After some great back and forth, Okada hit a modified Rainmaker followed by a full blown Rainmaker to win his third IWGP Heavyweight Title. Great match and probably the best of their four matches. Post-match speech for Okada. ****
Winner and NEW IWGP Heavyweight Champion: Kazuchika Okada
