WWE SmackDown Results: July 30, 2015

A Lunatic Partner.

The 832nd edition of WWE Thursday Night SmackDown came to you from the BOK Center in Tulsa, OK. After a submission loss to John Cena in a vicious United States Championship match on RAW that left Cena with a broken nose, WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins would be on SmackDown as the self-proclaimed “future of WWE” would go one-on-one with “The Swiss Superman” Cesaro in a rematch from last week’s SmackDown. The last time that these two squared off, Cesaro nearly came away with a major victory over the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, but Seth Rollins used some underhanded tactics to ultimately walk out as the winner. Will Cesaro defeat the WWE World Heavyweight Champion and make it the second loss of the week for Seth Rollins or will Rollins rebound from his loss on Monday night with another victory over Cesaro?

Match Results

  • Non-Title: Cesaro def. Seth Rollins by DQ after Kevin Owens interferes.
  • 8-Man Tag: The Lucha Dragons & Los Matadores (with El Torito) def. The Ascension and Big E & Kofi Kingston (with Xavier Woods) by Kalisto rolling up Viktor.
  • Rusev (with Summer Rae) def. Jack Swagger by submission to the Accolade.
  • Stardust def. R-Truth by pin following the Queen’s Crossbow.
  • Cesaro & Dean Ambrose def. Kevin Owens & Seth Rollins by Cesaro rolling up Kevin Owens.

DVD Review: WWE Elimination Chamber 2015

Certificate: TBC
Running Time: 186mins (3hrs 26mins – including extras)
Discs: 1

  • Elimination Chamber Match For The WWE Tag Team Championship: The New Day v Cesaro & Tyson Kidd v Lucha Dragons v Prime Time Players v Los Matadores v The Ascension
  • Lana Wishes Dolph Ziggler Good Luck
  • Triple Threat Match For The WWE Divas Championship: Nikki Bella v Paige v Naomi
  • Champion v Champion Match: John Cena v Kevin Owens
  • Neville v Bo Dallas
  • Triple H Lays Down the Law

  • Zack Ryder v Stardust – Elimination Chamber Kickoff Show
  • Ryback Wants More
  • Nikki Bella is a Champion

Seemingly announced on a whim, Elimination Chamber was the third of three big shows in the month of May (Payback and NXT Takeover came before it). That being said, the card itself had curiosity value of the bat with the announcement that the Intercontinental Championship would be defended inside the impressive structure.

The novelty of seeing mid-carders inside the domain (generally) of those vying for the World Championship was compounded by the first-ever Tag-Team Elimination Chamber Match. Initial buzz was on whether it would be the teams in a pod together or three teams with only one person in the pod. In the end, we had 13 wrestlers in the match due to The New Day exercising their Freebird Rule status.

The big question was whether the match itself would be any good or if the amount of wrestlers would cause a train wreck instead.

On the night, the opener was a mixture of both. Worst performer was undoubtedly Kalisto, who seemed to have no idea he was on TV and just wanted to climb the cage. New Day and Titus O’Neil were the stand-outs and this was the last time The Ascension looked anywhere near competent.

As a huge fan of theirs when they were in NXT, the sub-Emma level of apathy they have received from the booking team upon their move to the main roster has been astoundingly disheartening.

Jumping ahead, the IC EC was also a bit of a disappointment, but had some nice sequences from the guys involved. It’s just a shame that it came about due to Daniel Bryan becoming as fragile as a hummingbird and having to vacate the title one year after he had to do likewise with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

The “breather” matches between the big bouts were decent, but didn’t get the time the other matches did, so were rather forgettable. The Divas Title scene is in need of a major revamp and at the time of writing this, the NXT Women (Sasha Banks, Charlotte and – be still my beating heart – Becky Lynch) made a triumphant debut on RAW, so it seems that might actually be happening.

Stardust v Neville was the definition of card filler, but did it’s job well enough and Neville’s acrobatics continue to impress the WWE Universe with every outing.

Despite being in the middle of the card and with no titles on the line, John Cena v Kevin Owens was the true main-event of Elimination Chamber. Owens, the dominant NXT Champion came to RAW and got right in the US Champ’s face, calling him out and challenging him outright to face him in his main-roster debut.

For over 20mins, these two put on an instant classic, a bona fide Match of the Year candidate. It’s not an understatement to say that John Cena has been exceptional as champion since taking the belt from Rusev and the quality of his bouts have been off the charts against a myriad of “random” opponents.

Kane, Bad News Barrett, Stardust, Dean Ambrose, Zack Ryder, Sami Zayn, Neville, Cesaro and Rusev have all been made to look great and semi-credible against Cena, with the recent outings of Cesaro (two weeks in a row) being the pick of a great bunch.

Kevin Owens had been the heel on NXT who crippled his best friend (twice), powerbombed the first name out of Neville and even pinned Finn Bálor in the middle of the ring. Setting his sights higher, he had a lot to prove coming in and to say he lived up to those expectations is a massive understatement.

In fact, I’d say this match is worth owning the disc for on its own.

The actual main-event was former Shield buddies butting heads for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship as Seth Rollins defended against Dean Ambrose.

For a while, it seemed that WWE had forgotten about Ambrose and reduced him to random craziness and nothing else. However, a few weeks of rehab and here he was; a viable threat to his former stablemate’s title.

Roman Reigns banned from ringside put Dean on the backfoot as Rollins was again accompanied by J&J Security (the uncrowned kings of comedic skits in recent times) and Kane.

The match was pretty damn good, with both men getting in their signature spots (although Ambrose needs to be taken aside and told to moderate his use of the pendulum lariat) and the finish, while splitting opinions, was (for me) perfectly executed).

Three extras on the disc, with one match (from the pre-show) and a segment from Ryback and Nikki Bella.

OK for a watch, but nothing to get excited about.

As said, the novelty of seeing non-main-event talent inside the Elimination Chamber is a valid selling point, while Kevin Owens v John Cena and Seth v Dean are fantastic wrestling matches. In all, four of the six matches go over 20mins and that is not to be sniffed at.

The big issue going forward with the DVD releases, especially of “PPV” events, is that now the UK has access to the WWE Network, you can get the event plus the rest of the back catalogue for £9.99 (for one month), which is £3.00 cheaper.

For those of us who are regular subscribers to the Network, I cannot in good conscience say that you’re better of buying the DVD of a PPV or Network Special. Of course, when it comes to the profile DVDs or the specials (like the upcoming Monday Night War retrospective), the Network rarely shows the full thing, so those will generally remain must-buys.

Due to this, the score below is in relation to the event itself only. If you do not have access to the Network, then you won’t be disappointed in buying this (as you won’t have seen it), for the rest, it depends on how completist you are

Points: 7/10

NXT Recap: July 29th 2015

Another week, another stacked card for NXT, where tag team wrestling was the focus of the show. Three tag team bouts filled this show, demonstrating that this division in developmental is in a far better place going forward than on the main roster at the moment. The main event was the most pivotal of these contests, as the NXT Tag Team Championships were defended by Blake & Murphy against the Vaudevillains. The champs have held the titles since the start of the year, and with Alexa Bliss in their corner, would be determined to continue their lengthy reign against the manly pairing.

In the other two tag team battles, Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady are in action opposite The Mechanics Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder, and later on one of the newest alliances on the NXT roster, Jason Jordan & Chad Gable, look to build on their impressive first outing with a victory over Elias Sampson & Levis Valenzuela.

As for the remainder of the show, Kevin Owens competes in his first match at Full Sail University since losing the NXT Championship, as he is “challenged” by Martin Stone. Baron Corbin has another squash match on his hands against Jesse Sorensen, whilst Charlotte accepts the challenge of Dana Brooke from last week’s edition.

Quick Results

  • The Mechanics defeat Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady
  • Baron Corbin defeats Jesse Sorensen
  • Jason Jordan & Chad Gable defeat Elias Sampson & Levis Valenzuela
  • Charlotte defeats Dana Brooke
  • Kevin Owens defeats Martin Stone
  • NXT Tag Team Champions Blake & Murphy defeat The Vaudevillains

The Mechanics vs Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady

After missing out on the opportunity to challenge Blake & Murphy for the NXT Tag Team Championship a few weeks ago, Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady were forced to start from the ground up to earn another shot at the belts. However, the Mechanics of Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder have been becoming a more solid unit in the past couple of months, and definitely won’t be SAWFT as the Jersey tandem would like them to be.

Great comedic moment when Big Cass confronts both Dawson and Wilder, whilst Enzo shouts taunts from behind his giant partner

Excellent hang time in the cross body from Enzo

Dawson and Wilder targeted the arm of Enzo effectively, including a Northern Lights Suplex onto that limb by Dawson

Big boot by Cass onto Wilder on the apron looked really realistic

Crowd Reaction

Great to see Cass get a strong crowd reaction when it’s usually preserved more for the plucky Enzo

The audience so loud in support of Enzo when under attack, and burst when the hot tag is finally made

Low Points

Not much wrong with this match at all, very solid encounter

The Mechanics combine with the Shatter Machine to pin Enzo.

Whenever Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady enter the arena for a match, the electricity in the crowd is tangible, and that is a quality many tag teams today lack. Whilst Enzo’s in-ring skills are still fairly limited, their charisma will shoot them to the top of WWE’s tag division one day. The Mechanics could easily find themselves there as well, as their work as a heel combination was impressive, as well as their Shatter Machine finisher which is visually fantastic.

Rating – 3/5

[GadgeTell] New tech developments could revolutionize how we store green energy

green energy storge

As operating costs continue to rise, green energy is becoming more prominent in both the consumer and enterprise spaces. Companies and consumers alike are looking to conserve energy, waste fewer resources and spend less money. The sentiment is definitely understandable.

That’s why a variety of new and unique technologies are in the works to help cut down some of the costs we rack up. Modern technologies like solar-powered equipment and utilities, electric cars, green building materials and even recycled e-waste may eventually have a huge impact on our lives.

One new form of technology — which will be used to preserve additional energy generated by green sources like solar panels or wind turbines — could potentially save Ontario up to $8 billion over an extended period of 20 years. However, it’s not just Ontario that would benefit, it’s anywhere that decides to implement this new tech. That information comes from a study by NRStor and General Compression Inc.

How do they plan to do it, exactly? A method’s been proposed that would implement compressed air energy storage.

New Green Energy Storage Tech

In order to store the excess energy, NRStor Inc. has proposed a form of technology that will compress air and preserve it in salt caverns. Presumably, it could be tapped into when additional power is needed, like when the wind isn’t blowing strong enough to produce energy.

In addition, it also plans to store excess energy produced by Ontario’s nuclear reactors. The province experiences times when there’s a high demand for energy (peak), and when there’s a low demand yet excess production (off-peak). For the times when energy is in a much higher demand, it must pay nuclear-operating stations in the area fees to cover the additional power output. Those fees are rolled out to ratepayers in the area, jacking up costs for everyone.

The NRStor study proposes that by tapping into stored energy instead – during times of increased demand – it could save Ontario consumers anywhere from $6.5 billion to $8.3 billion over 20 years. It would also reduce carbon emissions by 87 million tonnes during that same time period.

Jim Burpee, the previous president of the Canadian Electricity Association, says that energy storage solutions are “part of the missing link” for modern power systems. “It’s a critical aspect for both reliability in terms of voltage and frequency control, as well as taking care of production when the wind blows, but you’re not using the electricity.”

NRStor and General Compression Inc. joined up to create the technology that is necessary to achieve this kind of energy storage. The compressed air technology they developed doesn’t actually use a form of fuel. Instead, it garners its own energy from heat-exchangers through something called a near isothermal process. Essentially, these types of compression systems utilize a heat absorbing and transfer process to store and maintain the energy.

This type of air compression has been used in the past, yet natural gas compression was adopted to compress the air in the storage system, which ultimately helps lower the operating costs of the plant. There are actually two of these compressed air storage plants in operation currently. One of them is located in the United States, and the other is located in Germany.

Whatever ends up happening in Ontario, these types of air-compression systems could potentially revolutionize the way we use green energy.

One of the caveats of renewable energy – especially as it relates to solar and wind power – is that it’s possible to experience lulls; periods of time in which less energy is produced. That’s what requires a dependence on a backup form of energy, like traditional power.

Advanced energy storage systems like the one NRStor and General Compression Inc. have created may eventually allow us to wean off the grid entirely.

JTG Talks How Black Wrestlers Are Portrayed In WWE, How Cryme Tyme Gimmick Happened

I recently spoke with former WWE star Jayson Anthony Paul, f.k.a. JTG, who was promoting his new book, Damn, Why Did I Write This Book?. During the interview – which was conducted before the Hulk Hogan controversy and will be published here on Wrestling Inc. later this week – JTG discussed his time with WWE, having heat in the company, speaking out against WWE and getting punished, issues wrestlers have with Triple H and more. He also talked about getting the Cryme Tyme gimmick.

“Well, there’s two aspects to the Cryme Tyme gimmick,” JTG said. “There’s the look of the characters. At first, I didn’t want to do it. My original partner was Abraham Washington. He called me up when we were in amateur class in OVW. He said we had an amateur show coming up, and he said if we were trying to get signed we needed to come out with bulletproof vests, fitted hats, a whole bunch of chains. We should wrestle in jeans and Timberlands. I said absolutely not, it’s too stereotypical, and I already bought tights and wrestling boots. He talked me in to it, and we did the amateur show. We blew the roof off at the amateur show.

“The characters, me and Shad came up with that. We did some vignettes down in OVW after we won the titles. Our trainer Al Snow said ‘you don’t have to wrestle every week to get over, do something to get your characters over, show some personality.’ Shad and I went out on your own and put those vignettes together that you saw on WWE. It was two different vignettes, but with WWE there was better production.”

JTG also noted that the way African-American wrestlers are portrayed in the company is a little behind the times.

“I think the reason is that on the creative team there aren’t enough people of different backgrounds and age groups,” JTG said. “If they bring in someone who can bring in someone who can bridge that generation gap, I think the African-American wrestlers will have more up-to-date stuff.”

Make sure to check back later this week for our full interview with JTG. You can purchase his new book, Damn, Why Did I Write This Book?, at by clicking here.
