[EntertainmentTell] Fin: Cumia firing hoax?, the case against Buzzfeed and Moms Against Gaming

No more handjobs, but her new show is even seedier

Is the Sirius firing of Anthony Cumia a hoax? In a word, no. That possibility was raised in social media discussions earlier. Yes, the O&A show is known for elaborate pranks. But I just don’t see Sirius, as a corporation, going along with something like this, especially the racial and sexual slurs. And besides- they’ve issued an official statement about the firing on their investor relations page. I’m pretty sure lying on there is either a federal crime or at the very least an SEC violation. So sorry, O&A stans of the world- Cumia really is fired.

[GamerTell] Video Game Comics are Better than the Actual Games

24213
I’m going to admit, before we get started, that I can’t stand The Witcher as a franchise for various reasons. I started reading The Witcher comic book as an obligation; it’s a video game comic and it’s part of my job. That’s when I discovered something strange.

Namely, that Paul Tobin and Joe Querio pack more story, atmosphere, and characterization into about four issues of The Witcher video game comic than the franchise did across three freaking games. The series is genuinely worth a read even if you’ve never touched the game, because it’s a moody, dreamy comic that stands on its own. If you dig into video game comics, this is a common theme. The current Halo series, also from Dark Horse, is far better written than any of the games its based on.

Part of this is the due to the publisher. Dark Horse Comics, who you may know from Hellboy, has licensed quite a few video games, ranging from Tomb Raider to Mass Effect. They’re a respected publisher with a rather deep stable of writers and artists.

Another factor, of course, is that these are comics. Games are a different medium entirely. In a comic, the writer has total control of a story. A game requires the players to hit the story beats, and which means it has to be more flexible.

But that doesn’t really explain all of it. For example, Wolfenstein: The New Order is a game with a fully realized universe and well-written story that’s engaging and full of surprises. And comics publishers are, in many cases, building these comics off of the enormous and elaborate design bibles that drive these games.

The solution seems to be simple: Hire a better writer and let him actually do his job. Still, it feels like we may still be talking about this for a while. After all, nobody talks about the expensive story engine in a game.
